Official DWC Directive & Closure Timeline

The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) of Sri Lanka has officially mandated the temporary closure of Blocks 1 and 2 (Palatupana entrance) of the Ruhuna (Yala) National Park. The closure will take effect on September 14, 2026, and will remain in place through October 15, 2026.

This annual ecological measure is enforced during the climax of the southwest dry season in the deep southern plains of Sri Lanka, where months without substantial monsoon rainfall result in extreme temperature spikes and dwindling groundwater.

Why Are Blocks 1 & 2 Being Closed?

The temporary pause of tourist jeep traffic in Yala's most popular zones is driven by three essential environmental and operational priorities:

1. Minimizing Wildlife Heat Stress: With water levels at historic seasonal lows, wild animals such as leopards, sloth bears, Asian elephants, and spotted deer are under physiological stress. Stopping the entry of over 400 safari jeeps daily allows animals free, uninhibited access to the remaining natural waterholes without engine noise or exhaust fumes.

2. Emergency Water Bowser Operations: Park wardens and conservation teams use the vehicle-free window to mobilize heavy water bowsers, replenishing concrete reservoirs and artificial drinking basins situated deep within the forest.

3. Critical Track & Infrastructure Maintenance: The DWC road crews will grade eroded dirt safari trails, repair concrete culverts damaged during previous floods, and upgrade park visitor facilities before the international high season begins in late October.

What Remains Open? Your Safari Alternatives

Travelers visiting Sri Lanka between mid-September and mid-October do not need to cancel their wildlife safari plans. Excellent alternative national parks are ready to welcome visitors:

• Yala Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6: These outer blocks remain completely open. Accessed through the Galge and Katagamuwa entry points, they feature fewer tourist vehicles, lush rocky topography, and healthy populations of leopards and hornbills.

• Udawalawe National Park: Situated just 1.5 hours northwest of Yala, Udawalawe is widely regarded as one of the best places in Asia to observe wild elephants in their natural habitat. Water levels in the reservoir remain steady year-round, and the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) feeding hours (10:30 AM, 2:30 PM, 6:00 PM) offer magical viewing.

• Lunugamvehera National Park: Serving as the vital green migration corridor between Yala and Udawalawe, Lunugamvehera provides tranquil, uncrowded safaris with rich birdlife, elephants, and leopards.

• Minneriya & Kaudulla (Cultural Triangle): If your tour begins or ends around Sigiriya, September is the golden pinnacle of 'The Great Elephant Gathering'. Up to 300 elephants gather every afternoon on the drying tank bed.
